Around the NCAA Nation

12 09 2010

I don’t typically venture too far from the Pac-12 tree, but there are some intriguing matchups and the Boise State story line that won’t be considered banal until they lose a game.

Boise State in the National Championship?

The Broncos had to travel across the country to play in a hostile environment, but let’s not kid ourselves into thinking that the Hokies are a champion caliber team in any of the BCS conferences. (Update 9/11 Virginia Tech loses to James Monroe at home) They have a solid running game, an inconsistent quarterback whose name sounds like a sex toy, and a an athletic yet undisciplined defense.

My qualms are not with Boise State, I typically root for the underdog in all sports and their jerseys on Monday night were awesome! But I hope they lose a game this year unless Boise making it to the championship game will take us closer to a playoff system. The blue-chip players in the BCS conferences are bigger, run faster, and hit harder, which leads to more injuries. Additionally, having to get prepared emotionally every week is one of the most difficult tasks in college football and Boise State has the luxury of avoiding it most of the season. Winning a big game is doable, but doing it back-to-back is exponentially onerous.

ACC still a BCS conference?

Virginia Tech lost at home to an FCS team, Miami lost their swagger in their showdown against Ohio State, and Florida State got blasted by Oklahoma. Is anyone in this conference going to step up and win a big game this season? They’re lucky that I still love the FSU girls.

Michigan vs Notre Dame

Rich Rod was able to get his job at the winningest college football program of all time because he was the king of the Big East Conference while he coached at West Virginia. It’s no surprise that he won his first battle against Brian Kelly who only had success in the Big East after Rodriguez took the Michigan job. Denard “Shoelace” Robinson looks like the second coming of Pat White running that spread-option offense. I guess Jesus is a Michigan fan?
